NanoKnife technology in medicine - what is it?

The NanoKnife technique is one of the latest advances in modern medicine. It allows you to successfully treat cancer of the pancreas, lungs and liver. With its help, even neoplasms in hard-to-reach organs can be eliminated. Nano-Knife is the only way for many patients to recover and return to a full life.

How does NanoKnife technology work?

NanoKnife is based on the impact of electric current on pathologically altered tissues, this technology is called "irreversible electroporation". Treatment involves the use of high voltage (3000 V), which is supplied through miniature electrodes to the pathology zone. The electrodes are inserted into the body through small punctures.

Under the influence of an electric current supplied by high-frequency pulses, the cell membrane is destroyed, which leads to the death of the tumor. At the same time, the surrounding tissues and organs are not damaged, which is another advantage of the method.

How is the operation going?

Doctors determine the size of the tumor, its localization, and also study the general condition of the patient. Diagnosis includes MRI and CT, blood tests and a general examination. In some cases, an electrocardiogram may be needed.

The operation itself is performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 1-3 hours. Through 2 small punctures, electrodes are brought to the tumor, as well as diagnostic equipment. The whole procedure is carried out with the tracking of the most important indicators.

A day after the operation, the patient can go home, and the punctures through which access was made will completely heal after 14 days.

Benefits of the NanoKnife Method

The advantages of this technology include:

  • no side effects - other similar methods using laser or radiofrequency ablation also affect healthy tissues (in addition, they could not be used near important blood vessels, since the latter could “weld”);
  • the ability to remove almost any cancerous tumor, regardless of its location;
  • short postoperative period;
  • low trauma;
  • no contraindications for use;
  • the ability to use the Nano-Knife to treat relapses of the disease.

The technology is constantly developing and even today it can be used to treat not only primary cancerous tumors, but also their metastases. Specialists are working to expand the scope of the method, which will significantly increase the effectiveness of the treatment of oncological pathologies in the future, as well as reduce the likelihood of relapses.
