Shellac French manicure: history, types and techniques of shellac

If you ask passers-by what they think is the most popular nail design, most likely, their answer will be French. Indeed, French manicure is known to absolutely everyone, even people far from the nail industry. And how much do you know about the history of its appearance, varieties? You will learn about all this and much more from our article.

origins

Despite the fact that this nail art is called French, its roots lie in the United States of America. The founder of the well-known brand ORLY, Jeff Pink, gave the world such a phenomenon as French.

Already in demand at that time, and it was more than 40 years ago, Pink was approached by a Hollywood director with a request to create a universal nail design that would be appropriate for any outfit and image of the heroine of the film as a whole. In order not to repaint the nails again and again depending on the color of the dress, taking away precious minutes of the filming process, Jeff Pink proposed the most natural design. Initially, he called his offspring not at all a French manicure or a jacket, but “Natural Nail”.

Later, having gone with his development to the capital of fashion, Paris, he released fashion models on the French catwalks, whose nails were made in a natural style invented by him. The sensational novelty, after his departure, began to live its own life under the name French, and Pink, convinced that everything French is synonymous with fashionable, renamed his offspring French manicure. Jeff Pink's mistake in a timely unpatented idea allowed other manufacturers and designers to spread the jacket to other countries.

At home, Pink was waiting for a wave of dissatisfied that he, being an American, chose the epithet "French" for the name. This prompted him to another change, after which the French manicure turned into "Beverly Hills".

The main differences between French and Beverly Hills:

  •  The American version is famous for its smooth transition to the crescent. This effect is achieved due to the fact that a layer of varnish of the main color is applied on top of the previously white-coated area at the free edge of the nail. While the classic jacket is characterized by a snow-white edge at the end of the nail.
  •  The color palette of "Beverly Hills" is predominantly pastel, nude. However, it is more intense than in traditional French manicure. Usually the nail plate in the jacket is of the most natural color, and sometimes it remains completely transparent.

At the moment, despite the fact that more than a dozen years have passed since the appearance of the French manicure, it remains extremely popular. Each major manufacturer of products from the arsenal of the nail industry has a whole series of products designed to create a jacket: varnishes of appropriate colors, screen stickers, etc.

Varieties

No doubt every girl knows what a French manicure is. Traditionally, it is understood as a covering of nails in beige or pale pink, with a white crescent at the free edge of the nail plate.

Did you know that in addition to the classic, there are many more variations? It is the many different ways that allow French manicure not to lose relevance. Introducing innovations, the French roams from season to season, still remaining in trend.

Common types of French manicure:

  • Traditional or Classic. The nude base is complemented by a white tip;
  • Wedding french. As the name implies, brides give preference to it. Usually, in addition to the white crescent, patterns or drawings are applied to the nails in harmony with jewelry, a dress, a bouquet, etc. This allows the image to look more complete. Sometimes in this way they focus not on all nails, but only on one finger, usually the ring finger.
  • Color. Under the color French design, they mean that the crescent at the free edge is not made in white, but in any other color. If desired, a single color applies to all nails or other shades to different fingers. Such nail art is especially appropriate in the summer.
  • Stylized or decorative. The use of all kinds of rhinestones, pebbles, sparkles, stickers, foil, drawings and patterns is characteristic of a stylized or decorative jacket. Sometimes they share stylized and decorative, but the principle of their implementation is identical and involves the use of various additional materials for decorating nails.
  • Millennium. This type of French manicure is distinguished by the use of micro-dust or sparkles that cover the edge of the nail, creating a shimmering effect.
  • Hollywood. Hollywood jacket or otherwise moon manicure, which celebrities liked so much. Its peculiarity is that the hole at the base remains “empty” or is highlighted in a different color than the coating of the entire plate.
  • Back. The reverse jacket creates a smile at the base of the plate, and the rest of it is covered with a different color.

In fact, there are even more varieties of French manicure. For example, the crescent is not found in a smooth arcuate shape, but in a triangular and sharper one. Thus, the jacket is truly a testing ground for fantasy, allowing you to implement the most unusual design ideas.

Another innovation

As innovative as the jacket itself was in its time, the appearance of gel polish (shellac) has become. This is a durable coating that allows you to keep your manicure in a presentable form for a period of two weeks.

In order for your French manicure to please you for such a long time, go to the salon or do the procedure at home. You will need: a lamp for drying layers, base, color and top coats, degreasing liquid.

A degreasing liquid is applied to the prepared nails, which have already been shaped and the desired length, which increases the adhesion of the gel polish to the surface of the nail plate. Next, the base to be dried, the main color, drying again. Now it's up to the white gel polish that will highlight the tip. It also needs to be polymerized under a lamp. The final touch is a fixer.
